Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

Percy Jackson & The Olympians Episode 1 & 2 | TV Review

I have been so excited for the PJO TV adaptation, I of course had to watch the premiere of the first two episodes the second I could. As a matter of fact, Disney+ dropped the episodes early, so I only had to stay up until 11 PM to watch both instead of 4 AM, so I’ll take it as a win. So, let’s discuss what we thought of the first two episodes (hint: this will contain mild spoilers). I think I’d like to put out a review every two episodes for the season, so let me know what you think of this plan!

Series: The Empyrean #1

Genre: Fantasy/Romance

Format: Hardcover

Page Count: 500

Rating: ★★★★★

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away…because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die

The American Roommate Experience by Elena Armas | Book Review

Author: Elena Armas

Series: Standalone/Spanish Love Deception #2

Genre: Romance

Format: Paperback

Page Count: 383

Rating: ★★★★☆

Rosie Graham has a problem. A few, actually. She just quit her well paid job to focus on her secret career as a romance writer. She hasn’t told her family and now has terrible writer’s block. Then, the ceiling of her New York apartment literally crumbles on her. Luckily she has her best friend Lina’s spare key while she’s out of town. But Rosie doesn’t know that Lina has already lent her apartment to her cousin Lucas, who Rosie has been stalking—for lack of a better word—on Instagram for the last few months. Lucas seems intent on coming to her rescue like a Spanish knight in shining armor. Only this one strolls around the place in a towel, has a distracting grin, and an irresistible accent. Oh, and he cooks.

Lucas offers to let Rosie stay with him, at least until she can find some affordable temporary housing. And then he proposes an outrageous experiment to bring back her literary muse and meet her deadline: He’ll take her on a series of experimental dates meant to jump-start her romantic inspiration. Rosie has nothing to lose. Her silly, online crush is totally under control—but Lucas’s time in New York has an expiration date, and six weeks may not be enough, for either her or her deadline.

Welcome & All Time Favorite Books

Hello and welcome to Coffee & Chapters! I’m McKenzie, the host of this humble new book blog. As a matter of fact, this isn’t my first rodeo in the world of book blogging; many years ago I ran the blog Bookish Things and Tea from 2014 to 2017. Since then, I’ve gone and (mostly) grown up as I finished up high school, graduated college, graduated college again with a M.S. degree, and adopted a plethora of cats. While I’ve had a good time the last years, I so desperately missed being able to curl up with a good book that’s not a textbook or academic paper, and share my thoughts with all of you lovely bookish internet people! So, moving on from tea to coffee, I hope you’ll join me in this new chapter in my book loving life!
